ChatGPT
ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) is a conversational artificial intelligence chatbot developed by [[OpenAI]], launched on November 30, 2022. Built on the GPT architecture and trained using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF), it generates human-like text responses across a wide range of tasks including writing, coding, translation, and analysis. On July 31, 2026, OpenAI confirmed that its models reach more than one billion active users and more than two million businesses, making ChatGPT the fastest-growing consumer application in history. By mid-2026 ChatGPT had expanded from a text-based chatbot into a platform encompassing AI agents, coding tools, voice conversations, third-party integrations, health information, and an advertising business.
In July 2026, OpenAI made the GPT-5.6 model family fully available, introduced full-duplex voice models (GPT-Live) and a workplace automation agent (ChatGPT Work), and merged its Codex coding platform into the ChatGPT desktop app — consolidating chat, coding, and autonomous agent tasks into a single interface. The company also retired its standalone Atlas web browser, folding its agentic browsing features into ChatGPT, and launched Health in ChatGPT for US users. In addition, OpenAI opened Presence, an enterprise agent deployment platform, and launched a program granting free access to frontier models for academic researchers.
