Zapia.com, ChatGPT and Gemini
Zapia.com, ChatGPT and Gemini are three AI assistants that emerged between 2022 and 2023 and now compete for the same broad role: a conversational program that answers questions, performs tasks and increasingly acts on a user's behalf. They differ most in origin, scale and platform. ChatGPT is OpenAI's general-purpose assistant and the product that brought generative AI chat to a mass audience; Gemini is Google's assistant and the brand for its generative AI across Search, Android and Workspace; Zapia is a smaller, Latin America-focused assistant built by BrainLogic AI and delivered primarily through WhatsApp.
ChatGPT was released by OpenAI in November 2022 and "has grown from a conversational chatbot into a central hub for AI-powered productivity, creativity and multimodal interaction"[^c2], reaching hundreds of millions of weekly users across web, mobile and desktop. Google announced its model family as Gemini on 6 December 2023, "replaced existing Google branding for AI services"[^c3], and renamed its Bard chatbot accordingly in February 2024; Gemini is now embedded across Google's consumer and enterprise products and reaches over 650 million monthly users in the Gemini app. Zapia launched in September 2023, offering "free services aimed at helping people manage everyday tasks through a simple and intuitive AI interface on WhatsApp"[^c1], and has grown to more than seven million users concentrated in Latin America before expanding into Europe.
The three products illustrate different strategies. OpenAI pursues breadth — the widest plan ladder, the largest third-party tool ecosystem, and a rapid release cadence across text, voice, images, video and agents. Google pursues integration — bundling Gemini into the products its users already rely on and grounding it in Google Search, which is unmatched in coverage and speed. Zapia pursues focus — a messaging-first, agentic product for non-technical users in a specific region, built on top of third-party models including Google's own Gemini. These choices produce sharp differences in pricing, privacy defaults, accuracy and availability, each examined in the pages that follow.
